Mary Dawe Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador Obituary

Mary Dawe

Mary Dawe (Thursday, June 25th, 1931 - Friday, May 3rd, 2019) Mary Dawe of Upper Gullies, NL passed peacefully away on May 3rd at the Eastern Health Long-Term Care Facility in St. John’s. Mary was pre-deceased by her husband Ralph and son David. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Edmund (Karla), and Gary. She was adored by her grandchildren Noel (Amy), Nick (Samantha), and Natalie. Mary was also great-grandmother to Elliot, Isaac, and Esmé. Sharing in our sadness and memories are Mary’s siblings William Stephenson (Victoria, NL), and Eva Leslie (Webster, NY, USA), brother-in-law David Clarke (Victoria, NL), and brother-in-law Aubrey Dawe and wife Cynthia (Upper Gullies, NL). Mary will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews as well as a wide circle of friends. Mary was the youngest of 10 children born to Amelia and James Stephenson (Victoria, NL), and was pre-deceased by her parents and siblings Irene Gray (St. John’s, NL), Arthur John Stephenson (Nanaimo, BC), Rosalie Noyes (Stevensville, ON), Alex Stephenson (Victoria, NL), Annie Clarke (Victoria, NL), Dorothy Smith (Mount Pearl, NL), and Jennie Egbert (Burley, ID, USA). Mary’s life centered around love for her family, friends, community and her church, St. Peter’s Anglican in Upper Gullies. She had a gift for entertaining, was a wonderful cook, and an avid gardener. As a teenager, she worked in a general store in Victoria, NL. This experience later served her well when she ran a successful small grocery business with her husband Ralph. For decades, trout fishing was a highlight of every summer with Mary usually landing the largest catch. She loved the opportunity for a lively game of cards with family and friends. Mary was a gifted musician who enjoyed playing her favourite Newfoundland folk songs and hymns on her accordion and keyboard. Mary Dawe led a full life, had boundless energy, and loved abundantly and unconditionally. To Mary’s in-home caregivers, and the staff at Hoyles Escasoni and Eastern Health Long-Term Care Facility, the family extends heartfelt thanks for the outstanding care provided throughout a lengthy illness. To niece Eva Laing and husband Gene, brother-in-law Aubrey Dawe and wife Cynthia, and neighbours Ray and Beulah Gregory, words cannot adequately express our appreciation for the loving care and assistance you have given for so many years. Visitation has been scheduled from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm on Tuesday, May 7th at Hickey’s Funeral Home, 570 Conception Bay Highway. A funeral service for Mary will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 8th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice or to the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (https://www.alzheimernl.org).
