Harrison Mitchell Obituary

Harrison Mitchell, 71, of Lunenburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday November 17, 2017 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late George and Annie (Peddle) Mitchell. Harrison always said he was born to fish. He spent his working life as a scallop fisherman and every spare moment besides that in his boat on a lake fishing for pleasure. He was proud to know every inch of every lake in Western Nova Scotia and could redirect any conversation back to fishing with skill. He served as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 23, Lunenburg, for 38 years. Harrison is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; daughters, Angela (Paul Lowery) Mitchell, Vancouver, Wanda (Mike Cane) Mitchell, Garden Lots; grandchildren, Cheyenne Nelson, Joshua Lowery; brothers, Randy (Gail), Windsor, Matthew, AB and William, NS; step-brothers, Bob, Calvin, Barry, Kenneth and Andrew Bennett; sister-in-law, Winnie Mitchell, Sambro; mother-in-law, Lucy Niford, Bridgewater, as well as his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed by his close personal friend, Bobby (Peggy) MacIntosh who he considered a son, as well as fishing buddies, Tommy, Henry and Eddie. Besides his parents, Harrison is predeceased by father-in-law, Wilson, sister, Edna Wilson, step-mother, Mildred, step-brother David, and sister, Angelina in infancy. Special thanks to Floor 6A (VG Hospital) and Kim and Kerry (Lunenburg Palliative Care). A heartfelt thank you to Dr. John Jenkins who traveled this long journey with the family right to the very end and who was much, much more than a physician to all of us. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. #3, Lunenburg and from where visitation will be held Monday from 7-9 p.m. and where a memorial service to celebrate Harrison’s life will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Ron Frampton officiating. Interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Red Cross or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
