Ellen Page Webster Obituary

Ellen Page Webster died at the age of 101, in Yarmouth on September 19, 2017. She was born August 18, 1916, the third of six children of Mary Page (nee Murray) and Dr. Charles Ashton Webster. At age 3, Ellen's life was altered by polio. Her easy determination throughout life may have derived from this childhood illness. Ellen became a reference librarian and her first career spanned from the opening of the Halifax Memorial Library in 1951, until retirement. At age 65 Ellen began her second career as a genealogist. She continued to work well into her 90s. Ellen was loved by family and friends for her welcoming smile, friendly ways, humour and wonderful, old-style, Nova Scotia cooking. She loved weekends at her Sandy Cove cottage on St. Margarets Bay, Symphony Nova Scotia, CFUW Halifax, mahjong, the arts, scotch whiskey, travel and life in Halifax. Ellen is survived by her brother, David Richan Webster (Montreal), nieces, nephews, and dear cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Elizabeth Mary Tremayne, brothers Dr. John Alexander, Geddes Murray, and Dr. Robert McNaught Webster. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will take place at the Webster plot, Mountain Cemetery, Yarmouth, at 2 p.m., Saturday October 7 with Reverend Charles Webster officiating. Donations may be made to the Yarmouth Branch of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Online condolences may be sent to the family at sweenysfh@eastlink.ca or sign guestbook at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net
