Jacob "Jack" deGooyer

DEGOOYER, Jacob Lammert "Jack". Age 90. Passed away peacefully on July 6th in his adopted hometown of Yarmouth. Born on October 6, 1926, in Gorinchem, the Netherlands, Jack was the son of the late Jan and Jantje (Hey) deGooijer. He was predeceased by his wife Lies, brother Bert, and sister Cora. He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Randolph (Margaret Gillespie-deGooyer), Annick (Robert Baker), and Kermit (Clare Robinson); grandsons Cameron, Jack, Gordie, and Keir; sisters Tera and Aat; and several nieces and nephews. Dad grew up in occupied Holland during the Second World War, and completed textile college there shortly afterwards. In 1960, Jack and Lies moved to Yarmouth, where he worked as manager, and then owner, of Bonda Textiles until the mid 1990s. They made many lifelong friendships in Yarmouth. Dad was active in the community, volunteering with the Rotary Club, YMCA, Beacon United Church, and the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation. He had a strong work ethic, and was always supportive of his family, be it making time to play ping-pong in the basement, organizing family trips, or offering good advice. Dad enjoyed summers in Lake Annis and traveling to see family in Holland, both of which he continued doing until last year. Jack was a generous, thoughtful, and determined father, grandfather, brother, husband, and friend who maintained a sense of humour to the end. He will be missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Safakish, the 4th floor medical staff at Yarmouth Regional Hospital, the restorative care team at Digby General Hospital, the VON, and Joanne Sheppard for their excellent care, as well as friends and neighbours who continued to provide companionship in the last few years of his life. There will be a visitation at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth between 7-9pm on Monday, July 10th, and funeral at Beacon United Church at 2pm on Tuesday, July 11th, with reception to follow. Donations in Jack's name in lieu of flowers may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation (yarmouthhospitalfoundation.ca).On-line condolences may be sent to: sweenysfh@eastlink.ca or you may sign the guestbook on-line at: www.sweenysfuneralhome.net
