Douglas Bennett Obituary

BENNETT, Douglas Francis- After nearly 28 years of retirement, swimming daily, Doug passed away suddenly at home, his loving daughter with him on Tuesday May 3rd, 2011. His gentle wit, sense of humour and kind words will be forever missed. We celebrate the life of the devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, beloved brother, true and great friend and eternal optimist that was Doug Bennett. He grew up in Point Anne, the eldest of eight, and enjoyed a happy childhood. He was an amazing athlete, winning regional tennis championships, an all Ontario baseball championship and was ‘The Point Anne Flash’ in hockey. Doug’s talents extended to flying where he spent three years during the war as a pilot. He rose to flight instructor. He gave up the Air Force, to return home to Belleville and marry Lorna Kiser and raise a family. Doug worked 42 years with Canada Cement LaFarge, where he ultimately became plant supervisor. He was an active volunteer in Kinsmen, the Belleville Curling Club, where he was a board member, and the Bay of Quinte Golf Club where he achieved a single digit handicap and earned the nickname ‘Long Ball’. He initiated the still running Golf-Curl Day. Doug will be sadly missed by his loving children Susan Bennett-Hamilton (David) of Whitefish Falls, Ontario, Stephen Bennett (Karin) of Calgary, AB and his grandchildren Erin Hamilton and Scott and Lauren Bennett. He is survived by his siblings Jean Hanna (late Don) of Oshawa, Shirley Edwards (Bruce) of Belleville, Gwyneth Dow (late Ray) of Oshawa, Phil Bennett (late Joan) of Belleville and Richard Bennett (late Bev) of B.C. Predeceased by his sister Beverly Cooper (Jack) and brother Donald Bennett. Arrangements in the care of the JOHN R. BUSH FUNERAL HOME, 80 Highland Ave. Belleville (613-968-5588). Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass, to be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, Belleville on Friday May 6th, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be appreciated by the family.
