Georges Léonard Obituary

Léonard, Georges, Maurice - With sadness, the Leonard family announce the death of Georges Maurice Léonard at Hastings Manor in Belleville on Sept 18, 2016 at the age of 99. Born in Cartierville, Quebec, he was the eldest of nine children of Georges and Albertine Léonard of Montreal North. With the outbreak of war in September of 1939, Maurice immediately enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery and volunteered for the 27th Battery First Canadian Anti-Tank Regiment, RCA. He was one of the first Canadians to ship overseas with the First Canadian Division. Later he was selected for officer training ending the war with the rank of Captain. He returned to Canada in 1946 with his English war bride, Jean Frances Collins. The couple lived for 53 years in Saint Bruno, Quebec. Maurice worked most of his career for Dow Brewery, retiring as Director of Procurement for Carling O’Keefe. Maurice and Jean moved to Belleville in 2011 to be closer to family. They marked their 72nd wedding anniversary on July 1, 2016. Maurice was predeceased by his wife, his parents and seven siblings. He is survived by his sons, Colin of Belleville and Michael of Vancouver, his grand children, Zoe Beaulac, Bronwen Gagne and Geoffrey Leonard and two great-grandchildren Aiden Beaulac and Morgan Gagne, all of Ottawa. Two of his siblings, brother Paul Emile Léonard and sister Fernande Lemaire, are still living in Quebec with their families. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bush Funeral home on Saturday, Sept 24, at 2:00 pm. Cremation has already taken place and there will be no visitation prior to the ceremony. Committal in the Belleville Cemetery will be immediately after the service and a reception will follow at the home of Colin and Veronica Leonard at 12 Lavender Place in Belleville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
