Sarah Thompson Obituary

THOMPSON, Sarah Lucy- The family of Sarah Lucy Thompson (nee Gentile) announces with deep sorrow her passing at the Charlotte Sills Wing of the Belleville General Hospital on Monday August 23rd, 2010. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Harold Thompson and by her loving son, Michael (Anna) of Timmins. Predeceased by her cherished daughter Rosemary (Rick) Bradford. Also survived by her grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Jennifer (Jason) Kerr, Jillian (Tim) Murphy, Christopher Thompson, Julia Thompson and two great grandchildren who brought her great enjoyment, Makayla Rose Potter and Sophia Kerr. Sarah is also survived by her sisters Marie Hopkins (Late Curley) and Ann Louise Haney (late Blyth) and by her sister in law Josephine Gentile. Predeceased by her parents John and Rosina Gentile, her sisters Josephine (Fred) Angelotti, Winnifred (Ben) Rightmyer, Rose (William) Robison, Marguerite (Charles) Sharpe, her brothers Sam Gentile, Vince (Lois) Gentile and numerous nieces and nephews to whom she was known as Aunt Sadie. Sarah was a very caring individual who loved her family dearly. In 1979, at age 51 Sarah turned to athletics and began competing in the Games for the Physically Disabled, at first locally and eventually nationally and internationally. Her career blossomed and eventually she set records at every meet she attended. The hundred or so medals, which cover her walls, attest to her success and make her family proud. In 1987, Sarah was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame. Later she received the 1999 International Year of the Older Persons Award for the contributions and achievements made in her community where her hard work and commitment towards her goals served as an inspiration to all. One year later, Sarah was inducted to the Terry Fox Hall of Fame in Toronto. Sarah was a good friend to all who knew her. It is sad that today we lose such a fine lady. Friends are invited to call at the JOHN R.
