Caspar Wistar Haupt Obituary

Caspar Wistar Haupt Jr. passed away on Monday, February 22nd, aged 92, surrounded by his children. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years Eileen as well as his children Margaret (Paul Thomas), Martha (John Gibbons), Meredith (Andreas Wrede) and Mark Haupt. Also his step children Bryant (Dayle King), Norman (Gayle King), James (Laura King) and Alison (Allan Smofsky) as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Edward "Pete" (Anna Catherine) and Martha (Harold Carter - deceased).

Caspar was born in Chicago on November 23, 1923 and attended Rose Polytechnical Institute in Indiana. At the age of 21 he fought in World War II with the US Army. In the late 50s he made the decision to move to Canada and loved it so much he never left and eventually became a Canadian citizen. Caspar was a civil engineer but also had many hobby careers; pilot, owner of a B and B and a farmer. He joined the Masters Swim Club at the age of 65 and swam competitively for the next 25 and held Canadian records for his age group. He made the butterfly stroke look effortless. He was a very modest man, kind, compassionate and a good listener.

Caspar went to live at the St. Lawrence Lodge in the spring of 2014 and so enjoyed sitting on the balcony with Eileen and watching the ships go by.

He died the way he lived; a gentleman at all times, putting others before himself and never wanting the spotlight. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Thank you to all staff members at St. Lawrence Lodge and Brockville General Hospital for their care and compassion.

Celebration of Caspar's life will be planned at a later date. Thanks to all friends and neighbours for their kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society Canada would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James Street East, Brockville.
