Richard Darwin Whitley Obituary

Whitley, Richard "Dar"

On August 5th, 2019 Dar passed at age 84. He was a true gentleman who carried a special light for those around him.

Husband for 56 wonderful years to Marg (Todd) and an amazing father to Chris (Kelly) and Rick (Jill). Loving grandfather to Julia, Jackson and Sara.

Predeceased by his parents Effie Irene White and William Whitley, and brothers Donald and William.

Brother of Marge (Simzer), Gerry and Bob and brother-in-law to Eleanor Whitley. Fondly remembered by numerous nieces, and nephews.

In his early working life Dar surveyed the St. Lawrence Seaway, but he will be best remembered by most as the operator of Esso Service Stations in Prescott and later Brockville. The last part of his career was spent at Y.E.A.H. (Youth Employment Assistance Headquarters). Dar was always an athlete and excelled at sports that required accuracy. While very competitive he always put good sportsmanship and comradery before winning.

A right-handed man who was a “South Paw” in sports, he pitched softball in both Prescott and Brockville. He won the city of Brockville trophy for 5 pin bowling.

With his brother Gerry he won the Ontario doubles lawn bowling championship in 1976.

An avid curler, he was the first local curler to use the “Stick” after his knee surgery and always had as much fun with drinks after the game as he did on the ice.

We would like to thank our family and friends who supported us in this difficult time. Special thanks to John Simzer and Herb Willer who often stopped in for a beer and a visit and Bob Fevens who came every week for a game of cribbage.

The Liturgy of the Christian Funeral will be celebrated on Friday, August 9, 2019, at 10:00 am in St. John Bosco Parish, Windsor Drive Brockville, Ontario. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged.
