Esther Mary Stanley Obituary

Passed away, peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, November 15th, 2014, at the age of 94. Esther was the loving daughter of Celina Tourangeau and Theodore Plouffe and wife of the late Albert (Bert) Stanley. She will be greatly missed by her sister Ella Plouffe Dale and her loving daughters: Barbara (Andre DeDekker), Elizabeth (Norman Simzer), Donna Stanley, Debra (Hugh MacLennan), Bonnie (Ron Sloan), Charlene (Mike Doherty) and Jacqueline (Rob Nixon). Cherished grandmother of Michele, Randy, Kevin, Shawn, Denise, Melissa, Shannon, Celina, Brad and Nicole and great grandmother of Brodey, Kirsten, MacKenzie, Jayme, Lana, Lochlyn, Ronan, Keegan and Kyler. Esther was predeceased by her sisters, Lavona, Doreen, Anita, Ramona and brothers Gerald and Hector.

Esther was born in 1920 on the family farm near Campbell’s Bay in the Pontiac, PQ. The middle child of seven, she grew up shy, but fun loving with a strong sense of family. Her father was a Farmer; mother was a mid-wife and postmistress, making the Plouffe farm a special part of the community and a special place to grow up. Her Grandfather owned and operated the only General Store for miles.

Being raised in a bilingual household helped Esther find work in Ottawa-Hull. For a brief time she was employed at Apsley Hall, Ottawa , where she was thrilled to have met Prime Minister MacKenzie King. In 1943, she married Bert who also grew up in the Pontiac. The young couple settled in Shawville and by 1951 had 3 little girls. They moved to Prescott, Ontario for work opportunities and added 4 more little girls. Esther was a homemaker but also was a seamstress, sewing gloves for Fischels. In 1967 Bert passed away. With 5 of the children at home, Esther led a busy life, but found strength in her family “up home”.

After retiring from the working world, Esther kept her home in Prescott, but spent many happy times “up home” with family and friends. She took the occasional vacation abroad to the USA, the Caribbean and Europe, but was always happy to return home. In her last years, she retreated to her Prescott home, where she was surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren. Her girls and their families will always remember her for her unconditional love, kind nature with a mischievous side, wonderful knitting, her annual vegetable garden and healing kisses.

Esther’s family wish to recognize the excellent and compassionate care she received from Dr. Steacie and the staff on 5t h Floor Palliative, Brockville General Hospital, Garden Street Site and especially the attentive care she had throughout the years from Dr. Kellam who was never too hurried to take time to see her.

A Celebration of Esther’s life shall take place at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 2451 County Road 15, Maitland Ontario on Sunday, November 30th, 2014 from 1 to 4pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial donations to the Brockville General Hospital Foundation or the Alzheimers Society.
