Janet Elizabeth Maase Obituary

After a life well lived and her laughter bringing joy to all, we bid farewell to our dear mother and friend Jenny on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Brockville General Hospital.

Always stylish, wonderful host of the best parties, talented painter, loyal friend, and loving mother and grandmother, Jenny leaves a great gap in our hearts and lives. Born in Montreal on November 8, 1926 to Elizabeth (nee Hurcomb) and Norman Wallace, her early years were spent between Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto finally graduating from Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa. Returning to Montreal she met her husband Charles and they married in September, 1948.

Montreal was home until 1978 when Jenny and Charles relocated to Brockville, Ontario living next to the St. Lawrence River. Jenny and Charles spent over 30 winters in the Florida Keys, returning first to Montreal and then to Brockville each spring. It was in Brockville where Jenny found the inspiration to paint, becoming a member of the Thousand Islands Fine Arts Association and making many friends and fans among her fellow painters and art enthusiasts. Her life-long interest and natural talent for interior design meant all her homes (and many friends’ homes as well) were full of colour, art, and warmth.

Pre-deceased by her son Peter (d. 1998) and husband Charles (d. 2003), Jenny leaves son John Maase and his wife Wilda Madden of Brockville, daughter Jill Maase and grand-daughter Lily Maase of Ottawa.

The family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers and physicians who gave generously of their time and devoted care so that Jenny’s last years could be spent celebrating special occasions and weekends at John and Wilda’s Laurentian chalet and in Brockville in comfort. Grateful thanks to the staff in ICU, Emergency, and 1 East at BGH who saw to Jenny’s every need in her final days. Special thanks to Dr. Steyn, Dr. J. Bhatt, and Dr. Au.

We especially wish to thank Dr. Robert Beveridge (“Dr. Bob”) and Dr. Lydia Lo for their wonderful care for Jenny over many years. Also, we are most thankful to our dear friends Dr. Frederick Albert and his wife Shirley Farrell for always being there for Jenny.

Most of all, we give grateful thanks to Wilda Madden, whose tireless dedication to Jenny’s care and companionship knew no boundaries, earning her the well-deserved nickname “Guardian Angel”.

The family would gratefully acknowledge donations in Jenny’s name to one of the following areas at the Brockville General Hospital: ICU, Emergency, or Cardiovascular Program.
