Mary Lewis

Mary Brown Lewis R.N., SCM, 1927-2011 It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Brown Lewis must announce her passing on Friday July 22, 2011 at the age of 83 years, peacefully at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital. Daughter of David and Elizabeth Bell, Mary was born on October 18, 1927 in Bombay, India and emigrated with family to Scotland at the age of 3yrs. She received her R.N. training at the Western Infirmary of Glasgow, graduating in 1951. In 1952 the Glasgow Royal Maternity Ward and Women’s Hospital of Rottenrow accredited her as a State Certified Midwife. Professionally, Mary served as a nurse in various locations throughout Ontario including St. Joseph’s Hospital Hamilton, Leeds Grenville Health Unit and the Ontario Ministry of Health Underserviced Area Program in Pickle Lake. But her greatest accomplishment and challenge was raising 3 children as a single Mother during the 1960’s and 1970’s. She will be lovingly remembered by her children David (Anna) in Sweden, Patricia (Charles) in Morrisburg and Nancy in Iroquois. As well, her grandchildren Duncan, Morgan and Elizabeth of Iroquois and Lisa, Linn and Laura of Stockholm, Sweden will fondly remember her. A celebration of Mary’s life will occur at Irvine Funeral Home 4 James St, Brockville on Friday July 29 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation precedes the memorial service from 1-3 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care Community Outreach at the Brockville General Hospital, Dundas County Hospice Program or OSPCA Leeds Grenville Branch in lieu of flowers.
