Helen, born in Edinburgh Scotland, enlisted in the Woman Land Army (Timber Corp) during WWII where she met and married Canadian soldier Alex (Honey) Nelson. Helen immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1946 and made Iroquois Falls her home.
Helen, an accomplished tailor, completed her apprenticeship before WWII and this led her to a career as a sewing teacher at Iroquois Falls Secondary School for over 30 years. Helen, a recipient of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award, gave her time to many local charities and events, including the United Church, Red Cross, palliative care, Meals on Wheels and the Canadian Cancer Society . Most of all the years spent working with the “ARC” Industries (Association for Community Living), to her, were some of the most rewarding times in her life.
Private cremation has taken place and internment at the Abitibi Cemetery in Iroquois Falls will be held at a later date.
