Annie Jane Olson Obituary

ANNIE JANE OLSON Annie journeyed peacefully into the loving arms of the Lord/Saviour on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Rainy River Long Term Health Care Home at Rainy River, Ont. She was born on Feb. 27, 1931 at Black Sturgeon Lake, Ont. to Alfred Charles Allan and Veronique Julia Allan (nee Jourdain). Annie was the ninth eldest of 13 children. She worked hard on her father’s commercial fishery on Black Sturgeon Lake and could often be seen in a skiff with her brother, Bobby Allan, and two or three of the younger siblings in the boat with them. She knew the lakes in the district “like the back of her hand” and remembered the way to the Cascades even to her life’s end. While still a teenager, she went to work for Ann Bannister at Bannisters’ Tourist Camp, then later at Vic Shapiro’s Northern Lights Camp. As was common in those years, Annie often sent a good part of her earnings back home to help out the family. Her voice was that of an angel. She and her brother, Bobby, sometimes sang live on CFOB Radio, harmonizing “war time songs” while playing guitars. In 1949, a horse whisperer cowboy from Spalding, Sask. came to the area and when they met, it was love at first sight for both of them. A self-confirmed bachelor at 30 years of age, Milo Olson and Annie, at age 19, married on Nov. 3, 1949. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in 2012. Milo lead the way “Home” for the love of his life Annie on April 1, 2013. Throughout the years, they could always be seen together. Annie worked side by side with Milo on their various fur traplines throughout the district. The Bush Pilots for Vern Jones Rainy Lake Airways and Rusty Myers Flying Service knew they were always welcome to a wholesome home cooked meal in a very clean, tidy fur trapping cabin (much thanks to Annie). Over the years, nobody ever left Annie and Milo’s without having had a meal which was referred to by Annie as “a bite to eat.” Their doors were open to family and many friends. Much laughter bounced off the walls over many card games. Annie loved to played Smear. In summers, Annie served and cooked at tourist camps while Milo guided and did the small motor repairs and maintenance at the camp. In their retirement years, Annie and Milo enjoyed several bus tours with friends. Annie’s passions were cooking and baking but her greatest love was that of which she had for her family. She moved to the Rainy River Long Term Care Home in November 2015 where she quickly developed a deep fondness for her care nurses. The bond was shared mutually. Annie loved to help decorating for special holidays and while she was still able to do so, she actively participated in all of the activities. She really liked playing bocce ball, bingo, crafts and painting. During those latter years Annie’s Spirituality grew immensely as she read the Holy Bible cover to cover, studied the Scriptures and attended evening church services and hymn singing at the long term care home. Annie was predeceased by her husband, Milo, in 2013; her infant, Daughter Anna May, on Sept. 21, 1951; parents, Alfred Charles Allan and Veronique Julia Allan (nee Jourdain); and all of her siblings and their spouses including sisters, Florence Gray (George), Pearl Mattson (John), Ethel Gustafson (Herb), baby, Thelma, Laura Boudreau (Art), Gladys Dussome (Art Lee), Evora “Ducky” Crowe (Dave “Dado”), Elsie Davidson (Fred), and Lillian Anderson (Ron); and brothers, four-year-old (name unknown), Bob Allan (Irene), and Fred Allan (Carol). Annie is survived by her daughter, Millie, and friend, Bill McEvoy; close niece, Lorraine Eklund and friend, Les Helliar; grandson, Billy J. Clarke-Kuryliw (Shelley); granddaughter, Anne-Marie Derfong (Allan); six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Honourary pallbearers are all of Annie’s nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held at Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont. on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11 a.m. with luncheon to follow. Cremation has taken place and interment will be at Emo Cemetery at a later date. If so desired, charitable donations may be made at to Woodside Mennonite Church c/o Cleason Martin, RR#1, Stratton, ON, P0W1N0.
