Dinah Mary McDowall Obituary

Late Dinah Mary McDowall Sadly the family announces the passing of Dinah Mary McDowall, 71 of Devlin, ON, on Friday May 8, 2015 at La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, ON. Dinah was born on September 28, 1943 in the County of Flete, Modbury Devon, England to Fernley and Mary Lockhart. Dinah and her family immigrated to Canada after WW 11 and settled in Aylmer, ON. She started her working career with the Dept of Highways in London, ON then transferred to Ottawa where she met and married Bill, the love of her life for over 50 years. Dinah and Bill had one son Timothy and she always said she went for quality and not quantity. In 1965 they moved to Almonte, ON, Bill’s home town. Dinah worked at the Women’s Career Counseling Service in Ottawa for two years, she then was attracted to the horticulture industry and began working for a large nursery operation and eventually took charge of the perennial division. She spent most of her free time taking courses from the University of Guelph and the University of Alberta. In 1981 Dinah and Bill moved to Devlin and purchased the Forsyth farm on Hwy 613, where they raised Scottish Highland cattle, established a consulting Engineering firm with George Wegman and eventually the Northwest Nursery. Dinah took charge of the nursery operation which extended to the seedling production for MNR and wholesale of plants across Canada, Michigan and Tennessee. Dinah is survived by her husband Bill, her son Timothy (Patti), grandchildren Ryan, Jennifer, and Aaron McDowall all of Devlin. She is also survived by her sisters Susan Hughes (Harry), Catherine Gerhart (James), brothers Peter and John Lockhart and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dinah’s life will be held by her family at a later date.
