Dorothea Anna Beryl Cupp Obituary

After a long and fulfilling life, Dorothea Anna Beryl Cupp left this earth, peacefully and surrounded by love. We mourn the loss of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Mom was born May 30, 1924 in Stratton Ontario to Cynthia and Archibald Shaw. She was the youngest of six children. Dot grew up in Stratton, and met her husband Bob at a baseball game in Pinewood. Mom had moved to Fort Erie to train as a “Rosie the Riveter”. Dad and Mom’s sister Helen visited her there, and Dad proposed. They were married on the Shaw family farm on June 7, 1944. As newlyweds, they lived in Thunder Bay. When Dad was discharged from the Navy, they returned to the Rainy River District, and settled in Fort Frances. Mom held many jobs during her working career, working as a cook at Smitty’s Drive Inn, the Emperor Hotel, Captain Robbie’s, and Kitchen Creek Golf Course. She also worked for Canada Post, delivering mail Rural Route, and inside sorting letters. One of the things retirement meant for Mom and Dad was travel. They took yearly lengthy vacations throughout Canada and the US, travelling with family, to visit family, or both. They were also able to travel to England and Europe. Mom was very community minded, volunteering for several organizations. She was a long time member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, the Hospital Auxiliary, and Rainycrest Auxiliary. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, an accomplishment she was very proud of. When Dad passed away, Mom moved into Rose Manor, where she enjoyed the nightly bingo and card games with “the girls” Her family was the most important thing in her life. Her friends were an extension of that family. Left to mourn are her children Louise (Ron), Rod (Lorraine), Wendy (Doug), and Ken (Pat), grandchildren Rhonda, Jason, Toni, Heather, Aurora, Sarah, and Darren, and great grandchildren Taylor, Jared, Tyler, Nicki, Tony, Travis, Olivia, Monty, Dottie, Jonas, and Shay. A celebration of Mom’s life was held at the Legion on February 12th. Honourary pallbearers were close friends Bernice Boivin, Bonnie Carlson, Greta Barr, May Matheson, Maggie Tarrant, and Marie McDiarmid. At Moms request, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or a local charity of your choice/o Northridge Funeral Home, Box 89, Emo, Ontario, P0W 1E0.
