Ellen Shirley Lord Obituary

It is with sad hearts that the family of Ellen "Shirley" Lord announce her passing on Sunday, January 6th, 2013. She passed peacefully at Emo Hospital on the wings of an angel, a prayer, and a beer. Shirley goes to rejoin family members that have gone before – her husband, Walter, daughters Lynne and Kristine, and son George. She will be greatly missed and remembered by her daughters: Betty McKinnon (& Alan – deceased), Gene Robins (& Neil), Dorine (Shawana) Durrani (& A.K.), Laurie Dale (& Marvin), and her sons: Tim Fowler (& Anita), David Fowler (& Cindy – deceased), Everett Fowler (& Michelle), and stepson Randy Lord (& Kerry); her grandchildren: Louise Lipskie (& Rob), Michelle Laquerre, Robert Paul Laquerre, Lawerence Thomas, Dennis Belanger (& Penny), Rudy Anderson (& Wendy), Jim Anderson, Lonnie Monahan, Steven Monahan, Palvashah Durrani, Najam Durrani, Nancy Fowler Kimball (& Stephen), Jessica Fowler LeBlanc (& John), Joe Fowler, and Kimberley Fowler; and her great-grandchildren: Erica, Wesley, Brody, Daniel, Cambria, Ashley, Josh, Logan, Sloan, Kiersten, Alyssa, Brayden, Josh, Mary, and Matthew. Shirley was born on November 14th, 1922 in Toronto to Joseph and Dorine Hobbins (deceased). She lived through the dirty thirties drinking too much rationed green tea, danced to polka with her first love when she was sixteen, and enjoyed shenanigans with her sister Eleanor (such as midnight sledding down Water Street in Peterborough when they were in their 40s). Known for her gardening, Shirley enjoyed entering exhibits at the Emo Fair Exhibition Hall…and she enjoyed winning those blue ribbons just as much. She loved to bake and loved even more to share her exquisite creations with family and friends. She touched the hearts of many with her cooking. Shirley got to travel with her husband Walter to PEI many summers and they both loved to camp and experience the journey. Having just celebrated her ninetieth birthday in November of 2012, Shirley lived her life to her fullest and enjoyed herself. A tough cookie, she had a wicked sense of humour (if you behaved) and the most amazing ability to win at Bingo. Even when visiting in other cities and towns, she would easily win the local jackpots (to the consternation of dedicated local players). She’d never turn down an evening at Bingo or the chance to clear you out of your change playing Newfie Bingo at the kitchen table. The lucky horseshoes and four-leaf clovers she always seem to find might have had something to do with it. From God she came, and to God she has returned. She is at peace now and while we will learn to live with her absence and miss her truly and deeply, we know she’s in the arms of loved ones that have gone before. As per Shirley’s request there will be no service or memorial. She will be cremated and her ashes laid to rest in Fort Frances with her daughter, Kristine, and north of Peterborough with her husband, Walter. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations can be made to the Emo Hospital, c/o Northridge Funeral Home, Box 89, Emo, Ontario, P0W 1E.
