Evelyn Brown Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Evelyn Bernice Brown, aged 97, on September 29, 2013 at Riverside Health Care Facilities with her family by her side. Evelyn was born in Burriss, Ontario to William and Anne Hill on June 4, 1916 and spent her childhood there until she married Clarence Brown on September 1, 1937. Evelyn and Clarence raised their five children, Dennis, Beverly, Marlene, Norma and, Audrey on the farm south of Devlin; a place she lived for 70 years prior to her move to Golden Age Manor in 2002. Evelyn was a hard worker and in her early years she was a telephone operator. While she was raising her family she worked the farm and eventually was the custodian at Cornerbrook School for 21 years. Her grand children all have many fond memories of helping Gram clean the school! Evelyn thoroughly enjoyed life. She loved playing baseball, gardening, picking berries, playing cards, knitting and crocheting and most of all, watching her grandchildren play hockey. Evelyn was a member of the Devlin United Church and The United Women’s Institute. She was a canvasser for The Canadian Cancer Society for 25 years and she had the honor of receiving Senior of the Year award for her commitment to the community. Everyone loved Evelyn’s oatmeal cookies; they were one of a kind and no one could ever make them like Gram! Evelyn was a quiet lady but when she spoke, she did so with kindness and love making her an icon in the family and a cherished friend with her peers; she will be dearly missed. Her secret to a long life was to eat lots of garlic, onions and sardines; don’t worry and be happy and, work hard, do your best and never complain. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Clarence; son in law, Ray Veran; daughter in law, Doris Brown and, her brothers Mike and Hank Hill. Evelyn leaves behind her son Dennis Brown; daughters; Beverly Veran, Marlene Nelson (Wade), Norma Brown (Bill), Audrey Lenart (John); sister in laws Wilma Redford (Rod) and Shirley Brown, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. In the lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to a charity of your choice. At Evelyn’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held to honour her life. Online condolences may be offered at www.northridgefuneralhome.com
