Gloria Alice Anness Obituary

Gloria Alice Anness (nee Hoard) was born on November 9th, 1920 in Fort Frances and passed away peacefully at LaVerendrye General Hospital on August 10, 2014 at the age of 93 with family by her side. She was the fourth child of Nelson and Alice (nee Brigham) Hoard. Gloria married Willis Anness on October 14th, 1940, and enjoyed 45 years together before Willis's passing in 1986. They had three children: Donald, Gerald, and Joan. Later in life, daughter Sherri joined their family in 1970. Over the years, Mom was a homemaker, tourist camp owner, pastry chef, cook, and loving wife and mother. From a young age, Mom enjoyed curling, both participating and spectating, and never missed a game on TV. She enjoyed ceramics, quilting, knitting and crocheting, and making crafts for the Christian Women’s Club, which she was active in for several years. Mom was an avid gardener, both vegetables and flowers. Mom and Dad liked to travel to destinations, such as Florida and Mexico. They also travelled to Tucson, Arizona where they eventually bought a mobile home and spent a few winters living there and made many friends. Mom and Dad owned a cottage on Rainy Lake, which they enjoyed for many years alongside their family and friends. Mom always enjoyed Sunday worship, which she attended until she was no longer able. Her heart was always open to others, as she supported various children through World Vision, as well as many other worthy causes. After Dad's passing, Mom had a special companion in her dog, Marmie. She also enjoyed her weekly outings with her special friends. They went on many daytrips and she looked forward to seeing them every week. Through her son Don and his interest in horses and harness horse racing, Mom developed a keen interest in the sport. She eventually owned various racehorses, attended the races regularly, and made many friends along the way. After she was no longer able to travel, Mom enjoyed watching the races on TV, especially Red Bugler, one of Don's best horses. After her declining health, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, visits with family, and used the TV as her main source of information to keep her up to date on what was happening around the world. She especially enjoyed hearing about all the activities of her children and grandchildren, and looked forward to the frequent phone calls and visits from each. She is predeceased by her husband, Willis (1986); her son, Gerald (1994); and son-in law, Gordon (2012); also many sisters and brothers. She is survived by her son Don (Sheila) Anness of Emo, ON; daughters Joan Maxwell of Kakabeka Falls, ON and Sherri (Darryl) Mason of Killarney, MB; daughter-in-law Ruth Anness of Victoria, BC; and brother Doug (Marlene) Hoard of Atikokan, ON. Grandchildren Nancy (Sean) Taggart, Shauna (Bob) Hammond, Greg and Glenn Anness, Terry (Leanne) Maxwell, Larry (Liz) Maxwell, Susan (Greg) Eyben, David (Sheila) Maxwell, Paula Mason, Trisha Mason, and Aaron Mason, as well as 25 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 14 at 1:00 PM at the Calvary Baptist Church in Emo, with Rev. Conrad Dueck officiating. Interment at Emo Cemetery to follow.
