Obituary for Kari Upton

It is with great sadness that the family of Kari Upton, age 93 years, announces her peaceful passing on Tuesday, October 25, 2011.

Kari was born on March 1, 1918, in Norderhov, Norway to Kristian and Olaug (Jallen) Thomassen Johnsrud. Kari was the ninth of their 12 children.

In the spring of 1953, Kari came to Stratton, Ontario to visit her brother Thomas and his family, her intention was not to stay. However, after being in Canada one year she decided that she would make Stratton her home.

Kari married Fred Upton on June 17, 1955 in Stratton, Ontario. They made a wonderful couple for a short nine years. Upon Fred's passing, Kari took over the daily operations of her husband's shop, J.F. Upton; pumping gas, repairing tires and paperwork. Kari was a very hard and dedicated business owner until the spring of 1988 when she sold the shop to Shawn McDonald and the business became Stratton Service.

Kari was a devoted member of the Stratton United Church. Her faith was an attribute that she lived on a daily basis.

Kari also loved to play cards and curled regularly until well into her 70's. Together with her special friend, Bill Anderson, they built a cabin on the Little Grassy River in Bergland. There they spent many special times enjoying the water and tranquility.

Left to cherish her memory are her brother Engebret (Nora) Thomassen of Honefoss, Norway; sister-in-law and best friend Linnea Johnsrud of Stratton; nephews Arne (Joan) Johnsrud of Lorette, MB and Dale (Marg) Johnsrud of Bergland; nieces Dorothy (Audomaro) Esquivel of Winnipeg, Jean Hipfner of Edmonton and Linda Cameron of Thunder Bay,

Kari will also be missed by great nieces Cindy (Jim) Miller, JoAnne Nygard, Suzanne Esquivel and Cheryl Schwalder; great nephews Thomas (Erin), Glenn and Daniel Johnsrud, Rick and Craig Esquivel and Grant Hipfner; great-great nephews Kyle (Alyssa) Miller and Dylan McDonald; great-great nieces Chelsea Miller and Alyssa Silvaggio; great-great-great nephew Ryder Miller, as well as many, many nephews, nieces, great, great-great & great-great-great nephews & nieces in Norway and Canada.

Kari is predeceased by her parents; husband Fred Upton; special friend Karl (Bill) Anderson; brothers Thomas, Ole (Petra), Torleif (Aslaug) and Kristian (Olaug) Johnsrud; sisters Ellen (Alf) Evensen, Birgitte (Olaf) Berg, Olga (Arne) Vorner, Gudrun (Ingval) Skjerven, Agot (Karsten) Petersen and Anna (Thor) Moholdt; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Richard) Ball, Ethel (Alex) Cameron and Bertha Morley.

Kari’s memory will not only be treasured by her family, but as well as by her Church family, and many community members.

A celebration of Kari's life was held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Stratton Millenium Hall with Pastor Peggy Mason officiating. Internment followed in the Stratton Cemetery.

Honourary pallbearers were Keith Jolicouer, Carson McQuaker, Clark Neilson, Leone Anderson, Linnea Johnsrud, Maxine Mason, Delores Romyn and Mary Vandenbrand.
