Margaret Heyens (Heijens) Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the Heyens family announces the loss of our matriarch, Margaretha (Margaret) Heyens on March 20th at Laverendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances with her devoted and loving family by her side.Mom was born May 20, 1925 in Hengstdijk Holland. Mom and dad were married April 19th, 1949 and immigrated immediately to Canada. They came with next to nothing to a strange country, and mom taught herself English by reading newspapers, always a baby on her hip and one on the way. They worked unbelievably hard to succeed, but succeed they did. She was fiercely proud of her 13 children and all their accomplishments. The many grandchildren gathered on Sunday for French fries and ice cream. All were welcome and gathered around her table, she always had time to ‘stir the pot’. In her later years when she finally had time for herself, she could be seen flying by on her bike going to garage sales. She had a flair for clothes and jewellery, loved music, dancing, knitting and crosswords, Jeopardy and Judge Judy. She was a life-long member of the CWL and a volunteer at the Salvation Army for many years. She was extremely strong through it all right to the end. She is survived by her 13 children, Louise Hantsch (Josef)of Germany, Antoinette (Netty) Gourlie (Bill) of Terrace, BC, Gilbert (Margaret) of Emo, Martha Dimit (Roger) of Kenora, Leo (Carolynn) of Kenora, Paul (Donna) of Stratton, Eugene (Eileen) of Rainy River, Jack (Adrienne) of Niverville, MB, Anne-Marie Robin (Gaetan) of Prince Rupert, BC, George (Barb) of Stratton, Margaretha (Rita) Numainville (Leon) of Timmins, Theodore (Ted) of Stratton, David (Michelle) of Thunder Bay, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by 3 sisters; Loes, Tilly, Vally and their families, as well as numerous Heijens families, all in Holland. She was predeceased by her loving husband Leon (1997), her children Mark (1966), Bobbie-Jo (1970), her daughter-in-laws Dorothy and Wanda, her son-in-law Phillip, her grandson Robyn, and numerous close relatives in Holland. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 30th at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Way church in Pinewood, ON. Pallbearers will be her 8 sons and honorary pallbearers will be her 5 daughters. Visitation will be held at Northridge Funeral Home, Friday, March 29th 7:00 - 9:00 pm, with prayers at 8. Donations can be made in mom’s memory to the Riverside Foundation for Health ‘Palliative Care Room’. We would like to thank Susan, Shirley and Liz from ParaMed Home Health and Laverendrye Hospital for their outstanding care in the last year, as well as her special friends at Golden Age Manor that made her time there so precious to mom and all of us.
