Early on December 28, 2013, Mary Gavin passed away peacefully at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario. She was born on the family farm near Emo, Ontario, on November 15, 1925. In 1949, Mary married Clarence Gavin (of Emo) and they happily lived out their married life in Emo. Mary loved her job with Canada Post and retired after 30 years of service. Despite her well-known aversion to flying, she took joy in travelling with her husband, family and friends, exploring Britain, Canada, Hawaii, and other parts of the United States. Mary was a long time, devoted member of Knox United Church in Emo, a member of the Emo Hospital Auxiliary and a past member of the Emo Curling Club. She loved to play golf, Bridge, Scrabble, Cribbage, and Dominoes with her friends and family. Mary was predeceased by her husband Clarence, her parents Agnes and Earl, in-laws William and Ellen, siblings Robert, Ruby and Joan and several brothers and sisters- in- law. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Socholotuk of Kenora, and Brenda’s husband Garry. She is also survived by her granddaughters Stacey and Andrea, her grandson Trevor, his wife Chelsea and her great-granddaughter Hadley. She is survived by her sisters Margaret, Jean and Hazel, sisters-in-law Dorothy and Phyllis and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the paramedics of Kenora and to the doctors and the nurses of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for their care of Mary in her final days. The funeral service will take place on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 1:00pm at the Knox United Church in Emo. A reception will follow at the Emo Legion.
