Mary Ellen Johnson Obituary

On Friday February 16, 2018 at 7 pm, our mom and gramma, Mary Johnson passed away. We are sad that she is gone but happy that she is now free of pain and reunited with her wonderful husband-our dad, and grampa, Eddy. She passed quickly and peacefully, just after smiling brightly at two of her children who were at her side. On Dec 5, 1931 Mom was born to Delphis and Muriel Rousseau, whom she loved dearly and lost when she was a young mother. Her siblings were Oliver (Bud), James (Jimmy) and Agnes (Aggie Daignault.) They had a large extended family and she maintained contact with many of them her entire life. Our parents met in the spring of 1949 at a dance at the Point Park Pavilion. They were married that fall and she proudly became Mrs. Edward E. Johnson. With that union, she became part of the huge Johnson (Halverson) clan. Their first child, Terry arrived late in the summer of 1950 and was soon followed by Rick, Mary, Joe, and then Kathy. Ten years later in 1967 they were surprised and happy when Leeann arrived. Their family was then complete with 3 sons and 3 daughters. Our parents enjoyed 61 years of marriage. They enjoyed square dancing, fishing, snow-mobiling, blueberry picking, travelling and many, many years of quilting together. Mom won many awards for her quilted creations and we will treasure them always. She always enjoyed sewing, a skill that she shared with her daughters and put to great use raising six kids. Our mom and dad were both hard workers and we know they must have had their struggles to provide for all of us but they never complained. They provided us with a warm and loving home and a cabin that we all enjoyed for many years. We thought we were the luckiest kids around and our home was always full of friends and cousins who were welcomed with open arms. It wasn't long before they welcomed grandchildren into their lives. They loved every one of them and kept their best interests at heart, even though sometimes that proved difficult. "Gram" helped out with them as much as she could, often having sleepovers at the lake, travelling, going on shopping adventures whenever possible and forever feeding them! She was a wonderful cook and baker, a talent they all reaped the benefits of. She has left her grandchildren with great memories and skills that they will share with all of those little ones yet to come. Our parents treasured their many friends and travelled with several of them on vacations. Mom enjoyed being part of numerous groups, especially "The Red Hatters" and was an integral member of The Canadian Mental Health Association. She met many great people through her involvement as well as in her employment over the years. Mom was predeceased by her parents and siblings and then our beloved father in 2011. Sadly, her son-in-law Bobby Mainville passed in 2010, and daughter-in-law Patti in 2012. She is survived by her 6 children; son Terry, grandchildren Todd (Javier) and Annissa (Mike Crespeigne), great-grandsons Carter and Gryffin; son Rick (Phyllis), grandsons Matthew (Kathy), great-granddaughters Mallory and Morgan, and Jeremy (Holly), great-grandson Eli; daughter Mary (Brent Calder), granddaughter Amanda (Shawn Jourdain), great-grandson Michael and his daughter Kendal (Mom's first great-great- granddaughter,) as well as great-grandchildren Nikolas, Brent, Isabella and Rebecca, and grandson Chris; son Joe (Lori Campbell), granddaughters Aimee (Chris Matheson), great-granddaughters Ainsley and Abigail, Dawn (Boomer Redford), great-grandchildren Henry and Norah, and Heather, great-granddaughters Marina and Charlie; daughter Kathy (Jim Cuthbertson), grandchildren Jay (Kathryn), great-grandsons Reid and Everett, Ria, great-grandchildren Campbell and Teagan and their dad, Todd Sether, Katie (Jordan Stus), great-granddaughter Brielle and grandson Tanner; Leeann (Ted Galusha) and granddaughters Jillian and Joleigh. She was so proud of her big family, 61 in all. Mom also had many nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends who were very special to her, many of whom she treated as her own. She loved having a houseful and loved to entertain, no matter how large a crowd. This skill led her to start a catering company with Kathy, an endeavour she enjoyed for many years. She especially loved to be called to work at Vedette Lake for the MNR feeding the fire crews. After retiring from catering she continued to quilt, play cards and enjoy any time she could with her family, especially when there were little ones involved. She loved them and they loved her. She was a talented and loving woman and her presence will be missed by many. Northridge Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Messages may be left on their website and information regarding donations to the Women's shelter in lieu of flowers is available there as well. The celebration of Mom's life will be officiated by Rev. Diane Clifford at La Place Rendez Vous at 2 pm Friday, February 23, 2018 in the banquet room (handicap accessible). Light refreshments will be served following the service. We realize that this celebration is taking place during the flu season and kindly ask that guests do not feel an obligation to attend if they are feeling ill. Mom was a great role model and in her memory we ask that you be open minded and welcoming to all and that you appreciate every day you are given. Hers was a life well lived.
