Sulo Maki Obituary

Sulo Maki On February 21, 1941 during a raging blizzard, Matti helped Hilma bring 13 pound Sulo into this world. On May 14, 2019, with his wife by his side and the love of his family in his heart, Sulo began a new journey. Sulo was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother. He was a man of few words, but his presence could fill a room. Quiet and solid and always there if he was needed. His life revolved around his family and he would do whatever he needed to keep them safe. Sulo was the son of Hilma & Matti (Pera)Maki, brother to Mamie, Raymond, Miliya and Helen. The husband of Beverly. Together they raised Dan, Les, John, Doug, Greg, Matt and Katriina. As his family grew, his capacity for love grew and he welcomed grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was proud of them and loved hearing about their lives. Sulo’s life was full of adventure. He started working at an early age and his first paid job was babysitting at 13. Shortly after he and his brother Raymond began working as orderlies at La Verendrye Hospital with the grey Nuns. (He says they ran a tight ship). Hearing the call of adventure he then went to Manitoba to see if the Army would be a good fit, but he said they were too bossy. He turned right around and went to Thompson, Manitoba and tried his hand at mining. After that he did road construction, bus driving and finally settled as a heavy duty mechanic for the MTO. Sulo’s greatest love was being outdoors and camping. Many summers were spent up at Crow Rock, camping with family. Even if he never caught any fish, he was content to sit in the boat with his fishing pole in hand. Sulo’s passing has left a huge hole in our hearts and we will forever miss him. Sulo is also survived by sister Helen (Jim) Daw, sister-in-laws Sadie and Annette and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Matti & Hilma, sisters Miliya, Mamie, brother Raymond and son Sulo Jared. Funeral service will take place at the Northridge Funeral Home, Emo, Ontario, Tuesday May 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will take place in the family plot in Burriss Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation , c/o Northridge Funeral Home, Box 89, Emo, ON P0W 1E0.
