Mary Lois Pollard Obituary

Lois Pollard July 21, 1922 - January 3, 2020 - Mary Lois Pollard (nee Williams) in her 98th year, co-owner of the former Highway Bookshop, passed away at Temiskaming Hospital on January 3, 2020. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Douglas Pollard (2009).

Lois was born on a farm in 1922 near Kent Bridge in Southern Ontario to Sidney and Maude Williams. She had an older brother, Alex (deceased 1964).

Lois was a librarian by profession holding a BA from UWO (1946), a Librarian’s Certificate (1947) and a Master of Library Science from U of T (1970). Throughout her career she was employed by several libraries and institutions in London, Brantford and Toronto. The next phase of her career began upon her retirement as a librarian with the CIBC Information Centre in Toronto in 1986, when she married the love of her life, Douglas Pollard, owner of the legendary Highway Bookshop near Cobalt. Lois embraced her life in Northern Ontario and truly felt it was her home. She dedicated her life to Douglas and the management of the bookshop until it closed in 2011. Lois was also an accomplished author and artist. She had many other interests such as traveling, photography, ball room dancing and rock collecting.

For the last nine years, Lois has resided at Place Sainte Marie in Haileybury where she enjoyed many friendships. Thanks goes out to those friends and acquaintances as well as to Community Living and to the staff at Temiskaming Hospital who cared for Lois in her final days. A very special thank you goes to her caregivers Mary Church and Molly Ward who helped Lois maintain an independent lifestyle in her later years.

A memorial visitation will be held at Buffam Leveille Funeral Home from 10:am to 12:pm Thursday, January 9, 2020. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2020 at a date to be announced. Memorial contributions to the charity of your choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
