Surrinder Dewan Obituary

Dewan, Surrinder (“Major”) passed away peacefully at home on August 27, 2019 at the age of 87. Born in Bannu, India on February 29, 1932. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Melvina. Lovingly remembered by daughter Melinda and son-in-law Jay, his sisters Swarna, Saroj, Sheena and little brother Subash. Surrinder was fond of social gatherings, music, and enjoyed being around people and making new friendships. At a young age he was athletic and was a professional cricket player for 6 years; he was known as a good batsman and a bowler. When he learned about the Bible and met Melvina, he gave up his career in cricket. He and his wife then pursued a life of full time service as ministers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. His generous spirit was reflected in his favourite Bible scripture in Proverbs 3:27, and he would often treat friends and family to a meal at local Indian restaurants. Surrinder was well known in the community as a teacher of the Bible, and a caring spiritual shepherd who devoted much time to encourage and visit patients in the hospital. Great appreciation goes to the palliative care team, VON nurses, healthcare workers and physicians who have cared for him during his illness. A special thank you for all the encouraging emails, phone messages and texts from dear family and friends that provided much moral support during this difficult time. A celebration of life talk will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses (57 Delaware Ave. Hamilton, ON L8M 1T6) on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 7:00 pm.
