Hugh John Edward Critchley November 24, 1917- April 25, 2014 Surrounded by his loving family, Hugh Critchley, age 96 peacefully passed away at Timmins and District Hospital. Hugh was predeceased by his loving wife Patricia (Cannon) in 2008. He is survived by his 5 children, Paul (Karen), Jo-Anne Browne (Bob), Betty Garvie (Jim), Kim Critchley Hannah (Norm) and Patrick. Beloved Grandpa to Dwight Critchley (Tracy), Kate Runk (Joel), Blythe Browne, Caolan Browne (Katie), Meaghan Unterburger (Dan), Matthew Garvie (Cristina), Melanie Garvie, Brittany and Jamie Hannah. Great Grandfather to Joshua, Abigail, Liam, Ella and Teaghan. Hugh was a long time resident of Matheson. He was born in Monteith, Ontario and was a graduate of the Northern Academy in Monteith. In his early years he worked as a surveyor on Highway 11 and 101. He moved to Brantford to work at Cockshutt Plow as a time keeper and then went on to join the army at the Brantford base. Following discharge from the army Hugh joined his father Philip Critchley in the family business P.H. Critchley Insurance from 1946-1992. Over the years, Hugh was active with the Boy Scouts of Canada, Royal Canadian Legion, Matheson Curling Club, Matheson Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge and the Watabeag Road Board. He was a loving husband, dedicated Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. He was passionate about life, his family and his work. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle way, and his sense of humour. In recent times, he faced many health challenges without complaint and with dignity, living each day to the fullest. Visitation St. Andrew’s United Church Monday, April 28 from 7:00-9:00pm and Tuesday, April 29 from 10:00-11:30am. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 29 at 2:30pm at St. Andrew’s United Church. Special thanks to Dr. Auger, each and every nurse and the entire rehab team on Continuing Care C and all hospital staff who helped Hugh maintain his independence, quality of life and dignity during his hospital stay. Thank you also to Leo Derganc, Anna Fraser and Rick Gauthier for your kindness. Many thanks to Dr. Rachel Maisonneuve for her special friendship. In lieu of flowers, donations to Bingham Memorial Hospital or Timmins and District Hospital Continuing Care C would be greatly appreciated by the family.
