Mary Jean Sutherland Obituary

SUTHERLAND, Mary Jean (nee Humphries) February 15, 1925 – May 1, 2021 Mary passed away peacefully at the Bonnechere Manor in Renfrew after a life fully lived for 96 years. Mary will be remembered with love and will be greatly missed by her daughters Bonnie (Wayne) Hartford, Beth (Jim) Handford, and Barbara (Brian) Howie. Affectionally called Nana, Nan or Nannie, Mary was adored by her grandchildren Ann McKechnie, Sue (Steve) Yovetich, and Nikolaus (Katie) Wootton, and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hailey McKechnie, and Lucas, Lily and Logan Yovetich. Mary was predeceased by her parents Garland and Jennie Humphries, and siblings John Edgar, Mabel, Nina Elizabeth, Margaret Alma, George Garland and her twin brother Bill. Mom’s love for sports started at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) where she enjoyed badminton, skiing, golf, and was a member of several championship basketball teams. Mom was a member of the Renfrew Golf Club and later was a founding member of the Kanata Golf Club, where she was the ladies club champion for three years and the women’s team captain. Mom passed her passion for sports on to her family, spending hours on the golf course or basketball court with her daughters and grandchildren. Mom was a dedicated sports fan at all of her grandchildren’s activities. She was always a good sport to join in any family competition (usually letting the grandchildren win) and never hesitated to take credit for her family’s talents! Mom was very active in the Beaverbrook Kanata community, organizing and participating in bridge clubs, curling, bowling, and golf. She was proud to be an initial member of the community. As our family matriarch there were not many trips, outings, or events that Mom was not a part of. Mom was affectionately known to all of our extended family and friends. We fondly remember the countless family outings to the hunt camp, the cottage, Florida, cruises, Alberta, California, Blue Mountain. We were always happy when Mom/Nannie came along. We spent over 45 years building memories together at the cottage, a place where Mom loved watching her family grow through the years from her favorite chair on the dock. Her bright smile and quick witt will be greatly missed but fondly remembered. We love you dearly Mom/Nannie. We would like to thank the kind, caring and compassionate staff at the Bonnechere Manor as we know Mom was very happy under your care. Mary's final care and arrangements have been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew. Cremation has taken place and we will celebrate Mom’s life in a private family ceremony. For those who wish to make a donation in Mom’s memory, you may do so to the Bonnechere Manor Foundation of Renfrew. Tributes, condolences and donations can be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com
