Smith-Edmonds, Muriel Agnes May A life lived in love will never be dull. Leo Buscaglia Our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, wife, and treasured friend slipped away on September 14, 2010 at Groves Park Lodge in Renfrew, Ontario embraced by the love of her family, who were always at her side. Muriel Agnes May Smith, R.N. was born on June 5, 1923 in Quyon, Quebec, the only daughter of the late Lew B. and Emma Smith (née McCagherty) and a direct descendant of the first Reeve of Renfrew, John ‘Tanner’ Smith. Although she was predeceased by her parents and three brothers, Ralph, Max, and Bob, she is survived by her sisters-in-law June West (Fred), Isabel Smith, and Nora Wickware. She leaves her children Christopher Sharpe (MaryJane Puxley), Jane Wickware (Jim Boardman), Anne Wickware Slater (Michael Robertson), and Ross Wickware (Patricia Murphy), her adored grandchildren Jeni, Richard, and Anna Sharpe, Jessica and Matthew Stimpson (Amy), Michael (Sandra D’Angelo) and Sarah Slater (John Gray), their father David Slater, her great-granddaughter Samantha Sharpe, her husband Alf Edmonds, his family and her many cousins, nieces and nephews. ‘Smitty’ trained as a nurse at Hamilton General Hospital, graduated on June 5, 1945 and remained friends with her classmates of 45B, especially ‘McDoug’, Dorothy McDougall Turner (Ted). She lived her life with passion and showed us all how to see only the good in people. Ever the eternal optimist, her glass was always half full and she faced each of her many life challenges with grace, dignity, and wit. She set the bar high and left us with a lifetime of wonderful memories. As per Mum’s explicit instructions, she will be cremated and her ashes interred privately at a later date between her father and brother Max at Thomsonville Cemetery, Renfrew. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation, 499 Raglan Street North, Renfrew, ON K7V 1P6.
