Doreen Rossiter Obituary

Doreen Bertha Rossiter (née Butcher) 25 February 1920 – 15 September 2012 Doreen was born at Christchurch, England daughter of Frank Lionel Butcher and Iva Bertha Kearley. The family later moved to Boscombe, England where she was raised and attended school until she was 14-years-of-age. At the time she was young, girls were trained to marry, have children, and stay home to keep house; it was rare for a woman to have a career. From an early age, she began knitting, a hobby she kept throughout her life right up to the end. A skilled craftsperson, she could follow any pattern no matter how intricate; could knit by hand or by knitting machine, which she also loved to use. For many years she made her own clothes and those of the children and when grandchildren started arriving, she knit for them keeping them supplied with cute sweaters, hats, mitts, etc. In 1934 at 12-years-of-age she was crowned Queen of the Children’s Carnival in Boscombe. September 6, 1941 she married Harry Woodford Rossiter - her best friend since they were children. After their marriage and still during WWII, she went to Lossiemouth, Scotland where Harry was stationed but later returned to her parents’ home upon learning she was to have twins. She shared their home on the south coast of England until the end of the war so was regularly bombed as German planes unloaded their cargo before heading out over the English Channel. In her lifetime, she saw many changes; when she was a child, her father delivered milk by horse-drawn cart, there were few cars around until after WWII. There were no refrigerators, which meant going to the store every day to buy the family’s meal supplies. There were no frozen dinners or fast food restaurants, each meal was prepared from scratch. She and Harry had three children: twins Harry Woodford, Jr., Brian Collingwood (Barb), and Sandra Ann (Bill Peters). In 1958, she immigrated to Canada with the children to join Harry who had gone before. It was a decision she never regretted making and enjoyed the life they made together in this country. December 1986 after Harry’s retirement, saw Doreen and Harry relocating from Mississauga to Kincardine where they bought their very first home and where they spent the remainder of their time together living life as they wished, enjoying the gardening, pursuit of their hobbies, and remodeling the house. After 69 years of marriage she was bereft at Harry’s death having lost her best friend, the focus of her life and finding the loneliness too much without him, she moved into Malcolm Place where she was surrounded by friendly, caring people who helped to fill her days; she still longed to be with her beloved Harry. Doreen died Saturday, September 15, 2012. We hope she has found Harry and is at peace. She will be sadly missed by her grandsons, Adam (Rona) & Chad (Susan) Peters, great grandchildren, Brice, Hugh, Gregory, Hayden & Maisy Peters. Her sister, Brenda Iva Butcher, her brother Alan Lionel Butcher and grandson, Alan Rossiter, predeceased her. Arrangements entrusted to the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine.
