VERNA MARY CUNNINGHAM Passed away peacefully at South Grey Bruce Health Centre in Kincardine, Ontario on Saturday April 18 in her 90th year. Predeceased by her loving and supportive husband, Bill, of 44 years, son Robert, sisters Eileen Runstedler, Beth Sanford and brother Harold Deneau. Sadly missed by her daughter Ann Ellis (Scott) and daughter in law Mary Jane Cunningham (Adam). Proud grandmother of Wesley William Ellis. Remembered by many nieces and nephews. Mary completed her nursing degree at UWO, and in 1944 she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Many postings took her to every corner of Canada. During the Korean War she was involved in innovative aero medical evacuation techniques flying from Hawaii and Tokyo Japan. In 1955 she completed her Masters degree at Columbia University in New York City. She travelled throughout Europe while stationed at Canadian Forces Medical facilities. Finally, Mary came home to Ottawa in 1961 to be Matron (Squadron Leader) of the new National Defence Medical Centre on its opening. After retiring her focus was her family, friends and hobbies. She was an avid gardener, reader, knitter and continued to travel the world. A memorial service will be held at the Rushnell Funeral Home in Trenton on Friday April 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Padre Stan Whitehouse officiating. A Celebration of Life reception will be held immediately following. Interment will take place at the Kingsville Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
