Mary Shaw Obituary

July 1929 - May 2012 Mary Elizabeth Shaw of Kincardine, Ontario, died on May 21, 2012 in her 83rd year. She was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Hartwick) and William Wilfred Clayton Farley and the wife of the late Donald Harold Shaw. Born in Kincardine, Mary had an older brother Grant, and two younger sisters, Helen and Doris. After attending Normal School in Stratford, Mary taught grade four at Rolph Road Elementary School in Toronto. It was in Toronto that Mary met her future husband, Donald, and had three daughters: Elizabeth, Anne and Patricia. Mary left her teaching career to raise her family. Mary was a great supporter of her husband's career at Gould Batteries, making her family’s home wherever Don’s career took them, including 25 years in Fort Erie, Ontario. Not initially a fan of the outdoors, Mary slept in a tent while building a log cabin with Don in Horning’s Mills, drinking water from a spring and fending off wildlife from her outdoor makeshift refrigerator. Mary hid fears of the outdoors so well that her daughters grew up unfazed by dozens of bats and families of mice in the cabin, thunder storms and freezing pond water. The cabin became a central part of the Shaws’ family life, with a great deal of swimming, tobogganing and making maple syrup. Mary and Don always welcomed their daughters’ friends to the cabin; their daughters’ friends became their friends. Mary’s interests were wide-ranging, including sewing, gardening, the CBC, grammar and spelling, genealogy, music and church. The last decade of Mary's life brought new challenges and joys. Mary lived with Parkinson's disease. She also lived with dignity and laughter. It was during this phase of her life that Mary met Stuart Loree and found love and happiness with him. Mary will be forever cherished by her children Elizabeth and Tim (Nye), Anne and Mike (Marriott), Patricia and John (McPhee); grandchildren Katie, Matthew, and Emily Marriott, Mary, Jonah, and Michael McPhee; Stuart Loree, siblings Helen and Bob Bullen and Doris and Jim Meldrum; Don's sister Evelyn Ross, nieces and nephews and many life-long friends. Visitation will be Friday, May 25th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, 757 Princes Street, Kincardine, Ontario. The funeral service will take place Saturday, May 26th at 1 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 345 Durham Street, Kincardine. In lieu of flowers, please consider remembering Mary by making a donation to Farm Radio International (www.farmradio.org) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (www.heartandstroke.on.ca).
