Thomas "Huff" Harris Obituary

THOMAS “HUFF” HARRIS Thomas Huffman "Huff" Harris, of Kincardine, died at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre-Kincardine on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, in his 91st year. Husband, father, grandfather, professional engineer, author, sports enthusiast. Huff had a zest for life, a fine sense of humour and a keen wit which will be sadly missed by his many friends. Beloved husband of Shirley (née Drysdale). Dear father of Ron (Linda) Harris, of Campbellford; David (Susan) Harris, of Calgary, Alberta; and Carolyn (Mel) Kettle, of St. John's, Newfoundland. Lovingly remembered by 11 grandchildren. Predeceased by his brother Bill Harris and his sister Adeline Ladd. Huff was born Jan. 17, 1921 in Ripley. Team sports (mainly baseball and hockey) were his passion during his teenage years. He was a fine southpaw pitcher and led his team to the Ontario Junior Championship in the mid 1930s. Likewise in hockey, the Ripley Redmen reached the Ontario Junior finals against Kitchener (which included the famous Kraut forward line of Bauer, Dumart and Schmidt - with two becoming NHL stars.) He attended the University of Toronto, graduating in 1945 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in electrical engineering. During his 33 year career with CN Telecommunications (headquarters Toronto), he held various technical and management positions before retiring in 1978. During his retirement years, he developed a sound philosophy for happy living. He believed that the only treasures that are truly ours are those we lay up in the hearts of others. He authored two inspirational books, “Open the Door Wide to Happy Living” published in 1986 and “Living Wise, Living Well” published in 1992. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he also composed a witty but philosophical poem, “I Love to Live” which was published in several magazines and newspapers. Special thanks to the nursing staff at Trillium Court, who took such good care of Huff for nearly four years, and to all those who have shown their loving support. Visitation was held at Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011. The funeral service was held in the chapel on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 with Rev. Don Harry officiating. Interment Kincardine Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Parkinson Society, the Kincardine United Church or World Team Canada (for missionaries Ron and Linda Harris) would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
