Helen Hildebrand of Braemar Retirement Home, Wingham, and formerly of Listowel, passed away at Wingham & District Hospital on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, in her 95th year. Helen Margaret Hildebrand was born in Wallace Township on October 16, 1926, the only child of the late George and Elizabeth (Berfelz) Hildebrand. She will be sadly missed by the Burnett, Holtzman, Leppard, Berfelz, and Hallman families, and her teacher friends. Helen’s childhood was spent on the fourth generation Hildebrand homestead in Wallace Township on the fifth concession Wallace. She attended a one room stone schoolhouse, SS4 Wallace, Listowel District High School, and went onto Stratford Normal School (teachers’ college). Her first teaching contract was at SS2 Wallace, then Sebringville for a couple of years, and then she moved to Hamilton where she taught for another four years. It was during this time that she took her first art class. Her inspiration in art came from Listowel’s art teacher, Roxie Ellis. Helen taught art for 30 years in her 38-year career. She taught at two junior High Schools in the former North York Board of Education, and also taught summer school and night schools for the Ministry of Education and at the Southampton art school. She was known as the party girl by most of her friends and acquaintances. She loved to play cards and enjoyed playing golf too, but her greatest joy was spending as much time as possible at her cottage in Southampton. Her favorite treat was a gin and tonic followed by a good roast goose dinner. She also enjoyed many cruises with fellow teachers and friends. A Celebration of her Life will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Listowel on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Ralph Dwarika officiating.
