LISE, Markus Johannes passed peacefully at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on Tuesday March 26th, 2019 with his family at his side. He is experiencing Life to the fullest with his Lord and Saviour in Heaven. Markus has forever imprinted his love for God’s creation on those who knew and loved him. Beloved husband and best friend to Jeanne. Much loved Dad to Nathan & Janna, Pauline & Todd, Anita & Len, Christine & Rob, and Shawn & Jessica. Cherished Grandpa / Opa to Jeannine & Dominick, Stephanie & Dan, Zachary & Victoria, Jocelyn & Dan, Adelle & Zach, Justine, Natasha, Dan, Rebecca & Erich, Sam, Annalise, Carlisle and Jesse. Adored Great-Grandpa to Theo, Amandine, Collette, Crosby, Samuel and Hailey. Dear brother to Jessie (Cor), Alice (George), Joanne (Bill), Margaret & Gerry, Diane (Peter), Henry & Louise, and the late Jim & Jane. Loved brother-in-law to (Margaret) Jan, Tony & Tena, Tineke, and Clarence & Pat. Markus was born seventh of eight children to Johannes and Jantje Lise on October 21st, 1942 in Groningen, Netherlands. They immigrated to Canada in 1952, along with materials to build a house on Upper James street in Hamilton. His class at Hamilton Christian School already had a Mark so his name was changed to Max, which stuck for many years. The family moved to a farm in Orangeville where Markus attended high school, though he returned for twelfth grade and graduated from Hamilton Christian High School. He was encouraged by his father to go to Calvin College where he completed undergrad in Pre-sem followed by Calvin Theological Seminary for his Masters degree. During seminary Markus married Jeanne Alblas and they started their family. Markus pastored at a church in Burdett, Alberta for four years, very involved in the local political scene. Next he moved his family to serve the Holland Marsh Christian Reformed Church closer to his and Jeanne’s extended families in Ontario. There he was involved in Evangelism Training. Next he accepted a call to pastor Mount Brydges CRC. After pastoring there Markus chose to adjust his career taking a course in Chaplaincy. He spent the next 20 years as a chaplain at Whitby Mental Health Center collaborating in Ecumenical and Multi-faith service. Markus regularly spent time sharing the beauty of God’s creation with those around him. In retirement he advocated for the term “retreading”, becoming very active in biking, birding and astronomy. Two years after retiring, he cycled 7000 km across North America with ‘Sea to Sea’, raising money for poverty. Markus’ marriage to Jeanne of almost 55 years, has produced 10 (5+5) children, 19 (13+6) grandchildren, and 6 (+2) great grandchildren. Markus and Jeanne have thoroughly enjoyed living in the beautiful community of Bond Head where they experienced encouragement and support from neighbourhood friends. Visitation and viewing will be held at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. Newcastle (905-987-3964) on Thursday, March 28th, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, March 29th, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Celebration of Life will be held at the REHOBOTH CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 30 Scugog St. Bowmanville (905-623-5032) on Friday, March 29th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Pastor John Wildeboer officiating. Celebration of Life will be live streamed at: https://www.jesusandyou.ca/listen-livestreaming/. Markus will be cremated and a Scattering ceremony with immediate family will be held at a later date.
