James Lake Obituary

James Baker Lake: February 8, 2019 Jim Lake was born January 30, 1927, the youngest in the family. He was the last to leave this life, and is predeceased by his beloved wife, Marian (nee MacDonald), parents, Joseph B. Lake and Mary Abraham, brothers Franklin, Joseph, George, and sisters Mary,Eileen, Dorothy, Anne, Joyce. He is survived by Mark Lake (Sheree, nee Horton), Mindy; grandchildren Kimberley (Bryan Mombourquette) and Kristen (the late Gerhard Gross); and great grandchildren Ella, Clara, and Gerhard. He will also be missed by his extended family of nieces and nephews, cousins and his friends around the world. He grew up in Powassan Ontario, and began his career in the navy before moving on to work for Ontario Hydro, spending his time between Cameron Falls near Nipigon and then the Niagara region before retiring in 1986. A Chief Regional Operator by trade, his true calling was sparkling conversation and storytelling. Jim loved his dogs and walking outdoors with them. He enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, sailing, and spending time doing all of these activities at the family cabin he built in northern Ontario. He brought his wife coffee in bed every morning while she was alive, then cooked a full breakfast for any other visitors, set to freestyle operatics and accompanied by his son, Mark, daughter Mindy, and occasionally the dog. He loved fine things – scotch, a prime rib, an exotic adventure to a far flung beach, and collectibles – and he was always an early adopter, being the first to have a digital camera, iphone, or flat screen TV, but also appreciated timeless media like books, especially about The Great War or other military endeavors, in particular, on the sea. The home he shared with Marian was full of beautiful works of ceramic, glass, and porcelain. It was full of memories, mementos, and laughter, as well as spirited political debate. At the end of his life, he shared his home with his daughter Mindy so they could take care of each other. Marian was the love of his life, and his reason to live. Her death in 2009 brought him insurmountable grief, and so we take comfort knowing that they’re together again. A celebration of life will take place on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Columba Anglican Church, 7 St. Columba Drive, St. Catharines ON. Donations may be made in Jim’s memory to ...... or the charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to MORGAN FUNERAL HOME. In memory of Mr. Lake, memorial donations to the Lincoln County Humane Society or the Walker Family Cancer Centre would be appreciated by his family.
