Donald McDougall Sproull, M.D. August 26, 1927 – May 24, 2014 Donald passed away peacefully with family at his side on a beautiful spring day at Bay Ridges LTC Center, Ajax, ON. where he had received excellent care. His many friends, colleagues and family will sorely miss him. Donald was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and received his medical degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. After graduation he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served for three years. He went on to complete a surgical residency in St. Louis, MO. In 1960 he returned to Canada working briefly in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia before settling in Oshawa, Ont. He became a highly regarded surgeon who touched many lives. Donald was honored with the Longest Serving Physician Award at Lakeridge Health, one of Ontario’s largest community hospitals, for his dedication to the medical needs of the Durham region. When not in the operating room Donald was a voracious reader, an avid antique collector, an accomplished wood worker and a dedicated gardener. He made two memorable canoe trips above the Arctic Circle. He and his wife, Sylvia (Skinner) enjoyed the outdoors, their many friends, and travel to Britain to savor the history and culture Donald had known as a child and young man and to visit family and friends. Together they transformed their properties working happily side by side in their gardens. Donald is survived by his wife, Sylvia, his sons, Iain and James, their wives Barbara (Allison) and Elaine (Kamitomo), his daughters, Nancy (Sieja) and Jane (Janes), their husbands Richard and Ken, his stepchildren, Gerald (Grieve) and Cynthia (Luksha), their spouses, Shelly (McGaw) and David, his brother James Sproull of England and his wife Valerie, his many grandchildren and numerous relatives in Britain. His brother, Gordon Sproull of Toronto, predeceased him. All will miss his dry humor and quick wit. We will gather to celebrate his life on Thursday June 12, 2014 at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME 124 King Street East, Oshawa, Ont. Visitation will begin at 3:30pm with a ceremony at 4:30pm. The family asks that remembrances to honor the life of Dr. Donald Sproull be made to the Lakeridge Health Foundation Surgical Department.
