Everett Richard McLaughlin

EVERETT RICHARD SMITH (“DICK”) MCLAUGHLIN February 13, 1926 to January 6, 2017 With heavy hearts, we said goodbye to a truly gentle man– a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Dick is survived by Patsy (nee Earl), his loving wife of 67 years; his five children, Peter (Virginia), Wendy Moses (John Craig), Rosemary McLeese (Rob), Paul (Pam) and John (Nancy); his fifteen beloved grandchildren, Charles, Katie (Mike Mills), Jennifer Moses (Michael Shaune Fitzgerald), Michael Moses, MaryJane Moses, Paul McLeese, Stephen McLeese (Lisa), Geoffrey McLeese (Heather), Douglas (Nicole), Katherine Jumper (Derrick), Robert, Julie Elkin (Jon), Andrea, Sarah Macoun (John) and Lisa; his ten adored great grandchildren, George, Peter, Charlie, Sky, Caleb, Callum, Annabelle, Isla, Adelaide and Lillian; and his good friend and nephew Brian Hare. He was predeceased by his only sister Mary Hare. Dick will be greatly missed by all those whom he touched during his 90 years, whether through family, friends, business or community. Dick graduated in Engineering from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1948 and spent over 30 years working at General Motors of Canada in Oshawa. After retirement, he continued to work as an entrepreneur and investor and remained active right to the end. As a lifetime resident of Oshawa, Dick was involved in many community projects including fundraising for the United Way, the building of the Civic Auditorium, the establishment of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, support for Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and various capital campaigns for Lakeridge Health Oshawa. He devoted his time and attention to each and every community endeavour with the same care and commitment that he approached everything else in life. We are thankful for the care and attention that Dick received from the doctors and nurses on C6 at Lakeridge Health this past week. A funeral service will be held on Thursday January 12, 2017 at St. George’s Anglican Church, 51 Centre Street, Oshawa, Ontario at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dick’s memory to either the R.S. McLaughlin Cancer Centre or to the Sunnybrook Foundation online at www.armstrongfuneralhome.net . Also on this website, photos, memories and condolences may be shared with the family.
