GARRISON, Gordon George – unexpectedly on Friday May 1, 2009 in Florida in his 85th year. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, the son of the late William and Beatrice (nee Tindall) Garrison. Gord, beloved husband and best friend for 58 years of Laura May Garrison (nee Powless). Much loved Dad of Carolyn Garrison, Toronto, Terri Garrison and her husband Don Shackleton, Toronto, Catherine and her husband Kelly Lavender, Seagrave, and Murray Garrison and his wife Heidi, Pickering. Proud Granddaddy of Paul and Jamie Leigh Goodman, MacKenzie Laura Boyd-Garrison, Justine and Brett Shackleton, Ryan, Kyle and Brady Lavender and Great Granddaddy of Blake Goodman. Dear brother of Doreen Knight, Newmarket, and predeceased by brothers Raymond (Kathe), Morton’s Harbour, Newfoundland and Russell (Doris), Toronto. Past Director of the Central Canada Association of Broadcasters; Elected to membership in the Half Century Club of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (1993); Past Director of the Society of American Travel Writers (1989&1990); Past National Director and Life Member of the Association of Kinsman Clubs; Past President of the Oshawa Chamber of Commerce; Past Director of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce; Served 12 years on the Board of Governors of the Oshawa General Hospital; Member of the Oshawa Rotary Club (1971-2002). Gord came to Oshawa in January 1948, to work with Radio Station CKDO. He formed a company and bought out his employer in 1958, owning and operating Lakeland Broadcasting Company from 1958-1978. He broadcast a weekly hour long travel program called “Travel Topics” which evolved into a regular series of travel features “Passport to the World” from 1964 to 1996. He wrote travel articles for several newspapers, Internet companies and magazines. A private family service with interment at Thornton Cemetery was held. All friends, relatives and colleagues are welcome to join the family at A Celebration of Gord’s Life on Sunday June 7th at the Oshawa Golf Club (160 Alexandra Street) from 4pm. Tributes at 5pm followed by celebration. If desired, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the World Wildlife Federation would be greatly appreciated by Gord’s family and can be made through the Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King Street East, Oshawa, (905-433-4711).
