Jon Edward Patterson Obituary

Patterson, Jon Edward “JP” – PLG Jon Patterson, Kiwanis Club of Westmount (Oshawa) - Passed away at Lakeridge Health Oshawa at 9:02pm Saturday evening, August 20th, 2016, surrounded by his family. Jon was in his 73 year and was the Dear father of Jon Patterson Jr. and his Fiancé Andrea Splitgerber. Loving grandfather of David Patterson, Matthew Patterson, Justin Patterson & his step-granddaughters Joce and Belle. JP was also a great grandfather to David & Alex’s son Noah. Dear brother of Janice Patterson and dear friend of Kathleen & William Swan. Jon trained as a pilot in the Canadian Air Force, and then graduated from Durham College in Business Administration in 1975. He was in the insurance business since 1983 and was a Chartered Life Underwriter. He enjoyed coaching his grandchildren as well as playing hockey and baseball and became recognized as an accomplished softball umpire not only throughout Ontario but also across Canada umpiring close to 200 games in 2015. People know him best as “JP”, Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 10, an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Westmount since 1982. He was club president twice (1989-1991) and Lt. Governor in 1993. Jon had a passion for children and became the Kiwanis District Administrator for “Builders Club” 1998 – 2001, before moving on to “Aktion Club”, Their program for developmentally challenged adults where he had been the Division Chair since 2002. Jon was a very caring and giving individual. He would often travel to third world countries with additional suitcases filled with clothing and other items. During his visits he would hand out the clothing to friends that he made along the way not expecting anything in return. He is probably the only person in the world who has a personal letter of reference from Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Omar Khadafy, not to mention George W Bush Senior whom he met at an Airport in Texas on route to Cuba. Above all, Jon was a great father and grandfather. Jon always put his children first and went out of his way to make sure they were always taken care of. From building soapbox cars with his son to driving his grandsons to hockey at 6am, he never missed an opportunity to support them while they grew up. Jon managed his son’s band during the 90’s and never missed being the token light man at his shows. Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air… . Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. - John Gillespie Magee, Jr Jon (JP) will be missed by us all and will never be forgotten. To say goodbye to a proud Kiwanian, Father, Grandfather, Great grandfather and Friend to many Please join with the family to celebrate JP’s life on Tuesday August 30th, 2016 at Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King Street East, Oshawa from 2pm to 4pm & 6pm to 9pm.
