Elizabeth Sheppard Obituary

Obituary of Elizabeth Sheppard SHEPPARD, ELIZABETH ANN March 3, 1931 - January 12, 2016 Gracefully passed away surrounded by family at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Beloved wife of Dr. Jack Sheppard for 60 years. Devoted mother of Tom (Rose), Julie (Vince), Jane (Ian), and Pete (Shannon). Proud Grandmother of Sarah, Emma, Nicholas, Ginny, Simon, Charlie, Jack, Hannah, Jake, Sam, and Elle. Survived by her brother Carl (Pat) Friedrich, and sister Joyce Friedrich. Liz was born in Mankota, Saskatchewan to Karl and Johanna Friedrich. She survived the dust-bowl in the depths of the depression before moving to BC where she flourished. She was a gifted singer and brilliant student and graduated from Vancouver General Hospital nursing in 1953. She moved to Santa Barbara, CA. before settling in Toronto. While at Sick Kids Hospital she met the dashing young talented Jack while feeding sick babies. Within a year they were married. After two children they moved to Peterborough to establish Jack's busy OB/GYN practice. Two more children came as Liz embraced her role as the consummate mother. Besides the load of running the household, she ran a volunteer program at the Civic Hospital, volunteered at schools, curled, golfed, sang in several choirs, hand-belled, and read for the blind with her incredible, soft, gentle voice of an angel. As the children grew up she became a tireless supporter of their sports and activities, and managed to keep everyone fed! She was Team Mom to many a rowing crew. Later, she lovingly took on the role of Grandma and continued offering support to friends and families far and wide. She was startlingly intelligent, endlessly curious, kind, warm, witty, snuggly, and many, many, wonderful things, but what most people remember is simply her uncommon grace. Heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care team, especially nurses Sherri and Debbie and Doctors Gibson and Mallory. A Celebration of Liz's life will be held at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club on Saturday, April 9th, 2016, 2:00PM to 5:00pm. All are welcome to attend. RSVP to santashep@sympatico.ca or 905-926-3222. Online condolences can be left at www.ashburnhamfuneral.ca. Memorial donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada or the PRHC Foundation would be in keeping with Liz's love of nature and concern for her community.
