Obituary of F. John Ganley GANLEY, F John - C.A. - At peace with his God and the world, John died on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Beloved spouse of Rosemary Burns (Kirkland Lake) for 52 years, tender and supportive father of four children: Mary Anne (deceased, 1966), Jim, (Jillian Napier), Cobble Hill, BC; Michael, (Belinda MacFadyen), Edmonton; and Paul, (Danielle Vincent), Newmarket. Beloved Grandpa of Jack, Jensa and Jay Napier-Ganley, Thomas, Megan and Sarah Ganley, and Emma and Ava Ganley. Dear brother of six siblings, Edith Olmstead, Anne Brownrigg, Jean Ganley, and George, Harry and Charles Ganley. John was predeceased by sisters Carol Scotese and Catherine Fox, and brother Robert Ganley. Son of Francis James Ganley and Mary Lafontaine, John was born in 1933 in Montreal. He graduated from Loyola College in 1960 with a B Comm, and from McGill University in 1965 with his chartered accountant designation. The Jesuit Community of Canada was very important in the formation of his life view and commitments. John then worked in industry while serving on the Dorval School Board. Entering secondary teaching in 1968, John moved to Peterborough with his family. Keen to serve the public good and to see the world, John and Rosemary volunteered in Kingston, Jamaica and in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 1975-81. He was later elected to the Peterborough Utilities Commission and co-founded the vibrant development organization "Jamaican Self Help" in 1981. He served as volunteer executive director of JSH for nine years and led countless teenagers on awareness trips to Kingston. He was honoured for this work in 1992, named winner of the Lewis Perinbam Prize in International Development. In 1994 John was awarded the Peterborough YMCA Peace Prize. He found time to pay Old Timers hockey and to help at the Peterborough Rowing Club. He also served on the board of the Trent Valley Literacy Association. In later years, John found a loyal friend and walking partner in George Tough, and they had much to discuss about public affairs. He delighted in the growing grandchildren and their sports and interests. A true progressive thinker, John embraced the social movements: women's, anti-poverty and environmental causes. He and Rosemary were named to the Peterborough Pathway of Fame in 2011, a crowning moment. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of John's Life will be held at COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL HOME - ASHBURNHAM CHAPEL, 840 Armour Rd., Peterborough on Tuesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. Visitation will take place on Monday, July 15 from 2-4 and 7-9.
