Harry Lyon Peterborough, Ontario Obituary

Harry Lyon

Obituary of Harry Lyon LYON: Harry Richard Peacefully, at the age of 89, our "good looking young fella" passed away at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Saturday, October 4th, 2008, after a long and stoic struggle with cancer. Harry will be sadly missed by his many friends, and family who care. We all appreciated Harry's knowledge, unassuming kindness, loyalty and especially his sense of humour. Harry said many times that he'd had a good life and had seen and done things many people never had an opportunity to. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Harry (at the age of 3) and his parents came to live in Canada. During World War II he volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy and was loaned to the Royal British Navy to serve as a submarine engineer and Chief Petty Officer in England, northern Europe, South Africa and Australia. Home again in Canada, he held engineering positions working on the Avro Arrow project in the 1950's, for Ontario Hydro and then Whirlpool, from which he retired. His retirement lasted 3 months and then Harry worked another 11 years for small manufacturers in various engineering capacities, before retiring for 3 months for the 2nd time. Harry then managed the Good Neighbour Care Centre/Kawartha Food Share in Peterborough for 9 years. Harry finally "wound down" by volunteering at the Centre until the young age of 86. Harry was a proud member of the A. F. & A.M. Chisholm, Todmorden Lodge #647, Toronto East, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and "kibitzing" with his many friends. In keeping with Harry's wishes to "slip away quietly", there will be no funeral service. However, we know that Harry would appreciate if generous donations were made in his memory to the Salvation Army and local food banks - two causes that were dear to his heart. Donations may be made at www.CommunityAlternative.ca or by calling Community Alternative Funeral Home at 705-742-1875. Robert and Sylvia would like to thank Dr. Ragaz and the doctors and nurses of PRHC's Palliative Care Team, Fred of the Physiotherapy Unit, and the housekeeping staff for their warm, kind compassionate care, and their ability to help Harry to be at peace with dignity. Thank you all so much.
