James Fraser Scates

Obituary of James Fraser Scates Passed away peacefully on May 15th with his family by his side. He will now rest aside his late beautiful wife Heather. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Ian (Jennifer), of Peterborough, Jeanette (Bruce) Carpenter, of Oakville, Neil (Dianna), of Lindsay, and Wendy (Daniel) Graham, of Rosemere, Quebec, his grandchildren Jillian and Tessa Scates, Ross, Blair, Hillary and Craig Carpenter, Cayley and Kevin Scates, and Sarah, Justin and Jeremy Graham, and his sisters Jill Gifford (David) and Pat Gordon (The late Robin.) Jim will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends. Our father (GP) was a quiet man with a sharp sense of humour and devoted to his family. Born in Bramhall, England, he worked for the merchant navy for twelve years as first officer of the naval ship The Andes. He then came to Canada with his wife In 1957. They settled in Montreal and raised their four children in Pointe Claire. He worked for Royal Trust and at the age of fifty became the successful business owner of Central Smith Creamery. He loved the cottage on Clear Lake where he enjoyed his passion for boating, as well as many happy family gatherings. After retirement from Central Smith Creamery he pursued his passion for gardening. He spent endless hours caring for his lovely garden and found great peace in nature. He was a proud member of the Peterborough Golf Club and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow golfers. He enjoyed woodworking and was someone who could make or fix anything. He travelled the world both at sea and with family. He was a very private man and loved his adopted country. Our hearts are filled with wonderful memories of such a generous man. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 25th at ST. LUKE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 566 Armour Road in Peterborough with a private family interment to follow. A reception will be held at the Peterborough Golf & Country Club following the service. The family wishes to express special thanks to the many doctors, nurses, volunteers and home care providers who cared for Jim. As a long time Rotarian and a Paul Harris recipient, Jim's wishes were that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to www.peterboroughrotary.ca Directions and service details may be found at www.AshburnhamFuneral.ca
