Obituary of Jean Brien BRIEN, Margaret “Jean” (nee Armstrong, formerly Brydon) July 12, 1930 – March 12, 2019 was a bright, witty, socially conscious woman who loved to play the devil’s advocate. She championed the underdog and befriended the outsider. A teacher of Journalism at Ryerson University and Journalist at the Globe & Mail, she enlightened and comforted thousands of Canadians in the national column that she secretly wrote for twelve years, “Elizabeth Thompson Advises”. During retirement Jean was a guard at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, where she befriended people from all walks of life. Jean, who hated injustice and loved following politics, will be remembered as a progressive thinker.A great admirer of Tommy Douglas, she was a longtime NDP supporter. Jean spent her recent years picnicking at Rogers Cove, championing the causes dearest to her heart and shopping at Vinnie’s. A resident of Peterborough, formerly of Toronto, born and raised in Beamsville. Wife of the late Arthur Brydon and Joseph Benoit Brien. Mother of Bill Brydon (Kathy Pong) and JoEllen Brydon (Don Maynard), and step-mother of Adrian Brien (Jackie) and Marc Brien (Sue Sparrow). Grandma of Georgia Jean Brydon Fisher (Brent Wright) and Evangeline Brydon Fisher (Brad Vandermeulen). Great grandmother of Alice JoEllen Wright. Sister of Cyril Armstrong (Joan) and the late George Armstrong (Catharine). Jean will be missed by her friend of 67 years, Pauline Ashton, and by relatives and friends in Canada and Northern Ireland. A gathering to remember Jean will take place at Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute (2432 Queen Mary Street, Cavan)on Sunday May 5th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
