Obituary of Olive Kirk
KIRK, Olive (nee Howard) June 2, 1925 - July 15, 2008
Olive was born in Winnipeg to Lloyd and Jean Howard, the second of four children, Willard, then Olive, June and Sharon. She grew up on a prairie farm attending a one-room country school, followed by two years of high school by correspondence, then two years in an Edmonton high school. She was married to Doug Kirk on September 2, 1950 in Vancouver. Over the next five years, they were blessed with five children: Michael (Margot Fabian), Linda (Mark Hutton), Gordon (June McNeil), Lorna (Carl Tonack), and Teri (Glenn O'Farrell). In 1960, the family relocated from Winnipeg to Peterborough. Olive attended the Peterborough Normal School for her teaching certificate, followed by 17 years at the local Children's Aid Society. She owned and managed The Diet Centre for six years, then retired to become an active volunteer with the local hospital, Community Care, Public Library, the Literacy Association, the Peterborough Family Resource Centre and other community groups. Olive touched so many people's lives over almost 50 years in Peterborough and will be remembered for her generous commitments of time and energy. Olive always treasured her strong family relationships. She and Doug shared almost 58 years of marriage, enjoying a rich life together. Through their children, she has been blessed with 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all her family. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a celebration of Olive's life on Monday, July 21 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Navy Club, 24 Whitlaw St., Peterborough. Condolences to the family, directions to the Celebration and donations to the Peterborough Family Resource Centre (www.pfrc.ca) may be facilitated by Community Alternative Funeral Home at www.CommunityAlternative.ca or (705) 742-1875.
