Viola Cope Obituary

Obituary of Viola Cope Cope: Viola Beatrice At St. Joseph's at Flemming on Saturday February 11, 2012. Vi, beloved wife of the late Jacob "Jake" and dear mother of Robert (Margaret), Brian, Betty and Barbara. Dear Grandma of Judy, Jeff, Alyssa and Mark. Great Grandma of Matthew, Brendan and Lauren. She was predeceased by her brothers Bert, Cliff and Rupe and sister Wayne. Vi was born on July 9, 1918 in Sioux Lookout Ontario, daughter of the late Robert Gregory Forsythe and Minnie Beatrice Burtt. She attended school in Sioux Lookout before enrolling in the Port Arthur Technical and Vocational School. On October 5th, 1940 Vi married Jacob Lewis "Jake" Cope at St. Andrews United Church in Sioux Lookout. Vi was a volunteer for the United Church of Canada for most of her life and also health care organizations having served on the Board of the Smiths Falls District Hospital (Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital) and other health care associations. As a banker's wife she donated as her means allowed and felt that her time, intelligence and clear thinking was the most valuable thing she had to offer. She was an avid knitter, a sometime seamstress, a fabulous cook, hospitable hostess and once organized a dinner for 25,000 retirees of what was then INCO. She was an enthusiastic and highly competitive and successful bridge player who missed being a Grand Master by a few Gold Points. She pursued those points with a vengeance and a willingness to spend, having been on more than a few cruises with Goren (the bridge guru). She owned a car when she was 16! Always opinionated, Vi was keenly interested in the issues of her times. Never one to be hindered by the past, she was broad-minded and embraced modern thinking on many issues. Jake, her husband of more than 50 years, was employed by the Imperial Bank of Canada which later became CIBC and his work took the family to numerous communities across Ontario. Jake retired in Smiths Falls in 1977 and in 1984 Jake and Vi moved to Newmarket where Jake passed away in 1994. In 1996 Vi moved to Peterborough and took up residence in Empress Gardens where she lived for 15 years. There will be a private family-only celebration of Vi's life. If desired, condolences to the family or donations to the charity of your choice may be made at www.CommunityAlternative.ca or by calling 705-742-1875.
