William Carleton

Obituary of William Carleton CARLETON : William Harry, Q.C., Suddenly at home on Tuesday, 15 December, 2015. Harry, late of Peterborough, at the age of 80. A sensitive, sotto voce hilarious man who cared deeply for his family, his cats, his community, and justice for all—and would growl at you if you noticed--he will be sadly missed by his wife, Judy Carleton, his children Richard (Jane Helmstadter), Toronto; Katherine, Peterborough; and Jim (Caroline Liu), Singapore; as well as grandchildren Thomas, Michael, and Sam, and cats Bella and Sugar. He was pre-deceased by his parents Dr. H.G. and Edith Carleton, his step-mother Nora Carleton, and his siblings Eleanor and Edmund. A lifelong advocate of Peterborough County and its people, Harry was born in Norwood, graduated from Peterborough Collegiate, and, after some time at Carleton University, graduated with an LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School. He and Judy met in Toronto, and married in 1959. He started his legal career in Port Arthur, ON and brought his growing family back to Peterborough in 1965, working in private practice at Coros and Sproule until 1968, when he joined the Crown Attorney's office as Assistant Crown Attorney. He became Crown Attorney in 1973, was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1977, and retired from the Crown's office in 1997. He was respected by colleagues for his efficiency, fairness, and commitment to the law. There will be a private family service at a later date. Given Harry's love of children and animals, the family requests that you consider a gift to a local charity that benefits either cause. Condolences to the family, and donations in Harry's memory may be made at www.AshburnhamFuneral.ca or by calling 705-740-0444.
