GOMER, Richard Ferguson, “Dick”, (in his 81st year) – On Thursday, December 5, 2013, at PRHC after difficult sailing through rough seas, in the early morning hours, Captain Dick found his window in the storm and calmly, quietly, drifted off towards his new port of call. Dick leaves his crew; Edie, his beloved wife of 42 years and Tamara, his “darling daughter”. Dick was brother to the late Gary, and is survived by sister Carol Pluimers (George). Uncle of Chris, Valerie and Mike. Cousin of Gerry Oliver, Mary Beth Batton and Dr. Tom Oper. Dick leaves good friends in many ports including Leamington, Windsor, London, Toronto, Florida, Emerald Isle, and Peterborough.
Dick retired from Domglas as their Corporate Distribution Manager, and previously worked at Heinz in Leamington as a Purchasing Agent. He was proud of graduating from RCAF training as an Air Radio Officer in 1952. Dick's life long passion was to sail; he was an excellent navigator and could always find a port in a storm. He loved music, he loved to sing, and in his earlier years he played clarinet and sax in a band. He was an avid card player and even helped create some “bridge nuts”. Downhill skiing was a passion for many years that also created some wonderful memories with fabulous friends. He was a talented “fixer upper” and loved projects especially the ones involving his boat. He really enjoyed being able to help his friends if they sent out an SOS call to him. Golf was a sport he enjoyed and even was able to create a golf partner out of his wife during the years in Florida. Overall however, his biggest joy and pride was daughter Tam who learned and benefitted so much from her Dad whether it was in swimming, diving, sailing, skiing or how to lay a new cork floor in her house.
A Celebration of Dick’s life will be held at COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL HOME, ASHBURNHAM CHAPEL, 840 Armour Road, on Wednesday, December 11, starting at 1 pm.
