Obituary

BATLEY, Robert Edward “Rock” – It is with sad hearts, we announce the passing of Robert, on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. With his family by his side, he went into God’s hands at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, in his 82nd year. Robert leaves behind his best friend and love of his life for 40 years, Patricia Anne McFadden. He was the loving stepfather to L’Vern & Marian McFadden and family, Christopher & Jane and family, Robert & Shawn and family and Evelyne & Ray and family. Predeceased by his parents, Murial (nee Todd) and Robert Batley. Dear brother of Margaret Batley (and her daughter Charmaine), Thelma, Art and Donna and the late Donald, Lorraine, Edith, Frank Huard and Tony DeCarlo. Rock will truly be missed by his many nieces & nephews. Special thanks to life-long friends John & Audrey Muckler.

From a 1948 King Edward School Outstanding Athlete Award, Rock Batley, 81, went on to spend the next four decades dedicating himself to sports. He played softball, baseball, hockey, lacrosse and spent two years with the Orfuns Football Club.

The highlight of his minor lacrosse career was a Minto Cup championship with the Mimico Mounties in 1951. In 17 years of Senior A Lacrosse (1952-1967) playing for Peterborough, Brooklin and Hastings, this high scoring defenceman totalled 500 points including 368 goals in 334 games. He played on 10 Eastern Canadian Lacrosse Championship teams with the Peterborough Timbermen, Trailermen, Mercury's, and Brooklin, winning the Mann Cup three times. While playing Senior 'A', he was also coaching the Hastings Juniors and was an OLA Referee. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game of lacrosse, Rock Batley was inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1998.

Rock, a goaltender, played minor hockey in Peterborough and senior in the Trent Valley Hockey League. He was the trainer for the Peterborough Petes from 1960-1966; the Omaha Knights of the Eastern Professional Hockey League 1966-1971; the Providence Reds of the American Hockey League from 1971-1977 and had a short stint in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers.

For almost 40 years Batley was a game official in a number of sports — lacrosse, hockey, floor hockey, broomball and softball.

“I looked back at what I did and had fun,” he said. “Being in the Peterborough Sports Hall of Fame was a great honour.”

As per Rock’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Rock’s Life will be held at a later date.

If desired, condolences to the family or donations to the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse Association (PMLA) can be made through the COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL HOME in Peterborough at www.communityalternative.ca or 705-742-1875.

Great news! There is a game waiting for you in heaven, and Rock is in the starting lineup tonight.
